Why mix perlite into a substrate

Perlite improves substrate aeration and drainage — roots get more oxygen and excess water does not linger. The substrate becomes lighter, compacts less and keeps a good structure for longer.

Thanks to its porous structure, perlite absorbs and gradually releases moisture, helping to maintain a more stable moisture balance between waterings.

Recommended proportions

The exact amount depends on the plant and the goal:

• Germination and seedlings — 10–20%
• General growing — 20–30%
• Moisture-loving plants — 10–15%
• Succulents, cacti, good drainage — 30–50%

How to mix it correctly

Moisten the perlite before mixing to reduce dust (a respirator is recommended). Mix it evenly into a moist substrate so the granules are distributed uniformly.

Too little perlite gives no effect — the substrate still compacts. Too much for moisture-loving plants can dry out the medium too quickly.
